What Does Islam Believe About Jesus?

In Islam, Jesus (Isa al-Masih, peace be upon him) is one of the greatest and most beloved messengers of God. A Muslim cannot be a Muslim without believing in and loving Jesus.

Mother of the Messiah

Maryam (Mary) in the Quran

Did you know that Mary is the only woman named in the Quran? In fact, Chapter 19 of the Quran is named Surah Maryam in her honor.

The Quran states that God chose Mary above all the women of the worlds for her exemplary devotion, purity, and steadfast faith:

“And [mention] when the angels said, 'O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.'” (Quran 3:42)

The Miraculous Virgin Birth

When the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would bear a righteous son, she asked: “How can I have a boy when no man has touched me, nor have I been unchaste?” Gabriel replied: “Thus will it be; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me!'”

Just as God created Adam without a father or mother, He created Jesus through a mother without a father by His word “Kun” (Be).

The Miracles of Prophet Isa (AS)

The Quran recounts the awe-inspiring miracles given to Jesus to convince the Children of Israel, always emphasizing that they occurred “Bi'idhni-llah” (by God's permission).

Miracle 01

Speaking as an Infant in the Cradle

When Mary was falsely accused by her townspeople, baby Jesus spoke defending her chastity: 'Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.' (Quran 19:30)

Miracle 02

Fashioning Birds from Clay

By God's permission, Jesus shaped a bird from clay and breathed into it, and it became a living bird by divine will.

Miracle 03

Healing the Blind & Curing Lepers

Jesus miraculously cured incurable diseases and gave sight to those born blind, always attributing all power to God alone.

Miracle 04

Raising the Dead to Life

He brought the dead back to life by the leave of Allah (Bi'idhni-llah), demonstrating divine omnipotence over life and death.

Interfaith Understanding

Islamic & Christian Understandings Compared

Presented respectfully, descriptively, and objectively to help seekers understand where beliefs align and diverge.

Nature of Jesus
Islamic Belief:

A highly revered human prophet, the Messiah (Al-Masih), and servant of God.

Traditional Christian Belief:

The Son of God, second person of the Trinity, fully God and fully man.

The Virgin Birth
Islamic Belief:

Affirmed without reservation: born without a biological father by God's decree ('Be', and it is).

Traditional Christian Belief:

Affirmed: born of the Virgin Mary through the Holy Spirit.

Crucifixion & Atonement
Islamic Belief:

God saved Jesus from execution; he was not killed nor crucified, but raised to heaven. Salvation comes through personal faith and repentance, not vicarious sacrifice.

Traditional Christian Belief:

Crucified, died for the sins of humanity, resurrected on the third day as the central act of atonement.

The Second Coming
Islamic Belief:

Jesus will return to earth before the Day of Judgment to defeat the False Messiah (Dajjal), establish peace, and pray as a follower of the final revelation.

Traditional Christian Belief:

Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead and inaugurate God's eternal Kingdom.

The Crucifixion: What Does the Quran Say?

The Quran explicitly addresses the historical claim that the enemies of Jesus succeeded in humiliating and killing God's chosen Messiah:

“And [for] their saying, 'Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.' And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them... Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.” (Quran 4:157-158)

In Islamic theology, God would not abandon His beloved righteous prophet to a cursed death on a cross; He rescued him and raised his soul and body safely into the heavens.
