Shahadah
The Declaration of Faith
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ
Ash-hadu allā ilāha illā -llāhu wa-ʾašhadu ʾanna muḥammadan rasūlu -llāhi
"I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
Word by Word
The Shahadah is two sentences. Each carries profound meaning.
لَا إِلَٰهَ
Lā ilāha
"There is no god"
This negates the existence or worthiness of any deity — nothing in creation deserves worship. Not wealth, not status, not people, not power.
إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ
illā -llāhu
"except Allah"
Only Allah — the one, unique, eternal Creator — is worthy of worship. He has no partners, no equals, and no rivals.
وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا
wa-ʾašhadu ʾanna muḥammadan
"And I testify that Muhammad"
A personal, sincere testimony — not just a statement, but a conviction of the heart.
رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ
rasūlu -llāhi
"is the Messenger of Allah"
Muhammad ﷺ is the final prophet, chosen by God to deliver His final message to all humanity until the end of time.
Why is the Shahadah so important?
The Shahadah is the first of the Five Pillars of Islam — the foundation on which everything else is built. It is recited in the call to prayer, whispered to newborns, and said at the end of a Muslim's life.
It is not just a statement — it is a covenant. A declaration of who you belong to and who you follow. Once said with sincere belief, it marks the beginning of a new chapter.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "I have been commanded to fight people until they say 'Lā ilāha illallāh' — and whoever says it, their life and property are protected from me, except by its right, and their account is with Allah."
What happens after saying Shahadah?
Four things you should know.
Your past is forgiven
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Islam erases whatever came before it.' You begin completely fresh.
You are Muslim
No ceremony, no paperwork, no approval needed. Your sincere declaration is enough.
You take your time
Learning Islam is a gradual journey. No one expects you to know everything immediately.
You try your best
Allah judges by effort and sincerity, not perfection. Keep going, even when it's hard.
